Introducing Sneakerbox.com, the subscription services for all of those who are a fan of different styles special accessories to had to your sneaker collection. We got a chance to speak with the owner of Sneakerbox.com and discuss how he came up with the idea, what’s next for him, and some of his obstacles and victories he has had along the way. Check out the interview down below!

Tell us about yourself

My name is Matt Turney (@matttrny) or Matty T. I run Sneakerbox.com an accessory subscription service for sneakerheads. I’ve been addicted to Sneakers as long as I can remember… Jordan’s, Air Force, Adidas, Cortez, Shell Toes, Roos you name it. I live in San Diego now, but I grew up in Beaverton, Oregon and went to high school a few blocks away from Nike’s World Headquarters and not far from Adidas and Avia either. I think the smell of tumbled leather and nubuck must have been in the air or something.

What is the Sneakerbox about?

Our goal is to provide you with “Everything you need to go with your Kicks.” Every month we send you a mystery box with different sneaker related items from great brands like Stance, Rastaclat, 47brand, Reshoevn8r, Laced Up Laces, etc. You can expect items like socks, cleaners, premium laces, and other items that you can hook to or enhance your sneaker obsession!

Talk about the experience building Sneakerbox.

It’s been incredible. In addition to building these monthly care packages for sneakerheads. I get an excuse to go to sneaker shows, fashion trade shows, and other events. The absolute best thing about building a business is the people you get to meet whether they are members of the Sneakerbox community or brand owners that have products in the box. I’m talking about making true genuine friendships and being able to help each other out. Sometimes members reach out and we make that connection and other times they just like to get these great subscription boxes that we put together. One of our members happens to live nearby (Joey) and helps me at sneaker shows, another member (Ian) had interest in writing articles and doing artwork for sneakerbox.com, and many of our members make youtube unboxing videos or share pictures of what they received on instagram. I personally am so thankful, so try to repost their pictures to help them get followers whenever possible and of course keep doing our best to send them fresh Sneakerboxes each month. It would be messed up if I didn’t mention the business connections that we have made that have been mainstays in our boxes like Ruben from Original Rufnek, Noah form LacedupLaces, and Steve from Reshvn8tr. These guys have offered great business advice and the opportunity to get their products into the hands of our members at a good price. When you meet good people and create a genuine relationship in business it’s not about what can someone do for me, but what can we do together to find success for everyone.

What are you currently working on? Any new projects?

For 2017, we’re looking at adding more options and better ways to serve our Members. If you like Yeezy’s and Adidas NMD’s we want to know about it and get you the proper products, If you prefer Jordan Retros, or KD’s and Lebron’s same. We’re also planning to do more themed boxes and collaboration like we did this past August with our Galaxy foam themed box, or last October with our Freehand Profit Artist edition box.

What has been the best box so far in your opinion?

The Galaxy themed box was by far my favorite. It just felt like it all went together. Galaxy laces, Space inspired socks From Stance, Sneaker Spray from SolScience, etc.

Name your ideal collaboration: mainstream or independent artist(s).

Easy, something with Ronnie Fieg of Kith. We also have been talking with DJ Clark Kent, MC Supernatural, and DJ Skee. It would be great to work with those guys as well.

Name something random that people do not know about you.

One of my favorite experiences (short of getting my first pair of J’s) was meeting a friend of a friend at the basketball hall of fame who let me get my hands on Kobe’s 81 point game shoe before it went out on display. Amazing piece of history, I wonder who has the jersey and game ball? They’re probably at Kobe’s house.

What’s one thing you have learned or discovered while being in the Sneaker scene/industry?

When you meet face to face you can see if you get along with someone and if they are genuinely legit. So get out to some of the sneaker shows and don’t be shy, if I’m there I’d love to meet you.

What can we expect from you in the future?

More collaborations with brands, sneaker artists, and musicians!

Anything else you would like to share with our readers?

I’m just a guy following a passion. If your thing is music, sports, or fashion always stay in pursuit and opportunities will come to you. It may not always look the way you thought it would or maybe you’ll have to work in some jobs that you don’t love, but at the end of the day if you stick with it, you’ll find fulfillment because you pushed through resistance and saw it come to fruition!
