Juan Demetrius McFarland, the now former pastor of the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Montgomery, Ala., had a big admission to get off his chest on September 14, and by October 5, he was removed from his position. McFarland, a church leader for 23 years, admitted to his congregation that he had full blown AIDS and had slept with various female church members without divulging that information.

He also admitted to using drugs and mishandling church funds, but those things are obviously on the low end of the totem pole of importance.

McFarland contracted HIV in 2003, and it turned into full blown AIDS in 2008. As one church member described to local station WMC Action News 5, “He concealed from the congregation of this church that he had knowingly engaged in adultery in the church building with female members of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church while knowingly having AIDS.”

Church members are scared to come forward and admit to sleeping with him, for fear that their stories will go public. One church member said that he hopes that by exposing the story one of the women McFarland slept with will “talk to someone.”

People want McFarland prosecuted. “Let the judge decide if he should go to jail or not,” said one church member.

Knowingly spreading a sexually transmitted disease is a class C misdemeanor in the state.

The church is asking for prayers during this tough time.
