Next up, we have an artist by the name of Aquino hailing from Massachusetts with swag and dope lyrics. We got a chance to catch up with the buzzing artist to dicuss his artistry, his sound, working on his latest project, music lessons he has learned and what’s next for him. Check out the interview below.

Tell us about yourself and your music.

I am Aquino Loayza a recording artist from Lynn Mass but my roots are in more so in Boston and Worcester Mass. As for my sound, well to be honest when I started I made a point to show it to friends and family and I ask them that very question. The answers were always amusing to me anyway. I got comparisons to a Latino Lil Dicky to Scarface (Not Al Pacino,) so its unique. I think a lot of that must do with Boston not having a Precedent for style or sound quite yet. So, it’s certainly an exciting privilege to try to enable that.

How would you describe your sound?

I touched a little bit on that before but like I said Boston has no sound that people hear and say Damn that’s Boston Hip Hop. But there are certainly rising stars that are helping shape that sound here, I am heavily influenced by Kendrick Lamar and his social commentary on his surroundings but also being a baby of the 90’s Ja Rule, Tupac, and Biggie had all been played throughout the house growing up. My mother is younger than most of my peers is parents and that has allowed me to grow up listening to music my Mom genuinely liked. That’s rare these days and It’s shaped who I am as an artist. Mac miller is later work is a big influence as well, on top of Mick Jenkins, Chance the Rapper, Action Bronson and Kayne West. Basically, I try to be versatile as humanly possible without compromising my vision.

Talk about the experience making your song/mixtape.

My album was a lot, A LOT of work. I spent probably months developing even the ideas that I wanted to portray on the album, My Audio Engineer Choziah is a god at that stuff, he made everything sound so crisp was extremely helpful in helping me mold the ideas and make it all coherent. I began this project with rap being more of a hobby then something serious but I saw the improvement over the course of the album and learned a lot about myself as a person and a ton about the industry as whole. Worcester’s rap scene where I recorded most of this album is super supportive and there’s tons of people there who are all dreaming the same dream as me.

What are you currently working on? Any new projects? Shows?

I just released an Album man! Honestly, I am enjoying the wave and it’s not to say I am not working on anything. My minds always working on ideas and concepts I am having some very good ideas about songs, and progressing my sound to a point that I can keep my current fan base and excite new people to seeing what I am capable of. I am opening a show for a friend of mine Kyle Bent in the next few weeks working on doing some features for some other artists and even trying to get some cool features in for some smaller projects I am prepping up for.

What has been your biggest highlight in your music career this far?

Honestly opening this show in the next few weeks is a huge opportunity I have had the pleasure of knowing Kyle for a few months, he’s a very talented artist and to be sharing the stage with another local artist who is making waves somewhere that I want to be. Hopefully this highlight question can be revisited soon as I keep doing more. It’s been around a year I have been doing this seriously so it’s a grind but I am up for the task.

Name your ideal collaboration: mainstream or independent artist(s).

Well this is a tough question, isn’t that why people begin rapping to begin with, to hopefully one day be put in the same breath as those whose inspired us to pick up a microphone and a pen and chase that Dream? But thinking about it there’s a laundry list of dream collaborations, Kendrick Lamar would top that list from a rapping perspective, but from a production one? Easily Kayne West, the man changed the way we make music production wise, he has done so much for the industry and one of his instrumentals? Man, I’d lavish at the chance to tear into a Kayne beat and make it my own. As for Local Artists, Joyner Lucas, easily. Man’s super talented carrying a lot of the dreams and hopes of Worcester on his back. Dudes talented and humble. Not enough humility in music these days.

Name something random that people do not know about you.

One random thing about myself? Where there’s plenty but I will say this one, I am Huge corgi fan. Those dogs are cute dogs. They have tiny legs and long bodies but they have a nice smile. Sorry Deschenes fan’s those hot dogs aren’t worth my time. You asked for Random so there you have it.

What’s one thing you have learned or discovered while being in the indie music scene/industry?

I have learned a lot of the background work that goes into stuff. I could get sample clearings on every song on my album due to international samples being used from artists in countries in Italy and Argentina. It was difficult, I am not a huge fan of the paper work and the logistics of stuff in the industry. But it comes with the business. I am excited for it.

What can we expect from you in the future?

That’s a good question. I am planning on releasing an EP this year in the fall and doing some music videos for songs from the Album and working on trying to do a couple of more shows. So, Little things really! But these are my goals this year, ideally, I’d like to see some of my music get some notoriety or cosigns outside of my Massachusetts bubble. I am looking forward to 2017 and beyond.

Anything else you would like to share with our readers.
