The great mystery of Beats Music’s fate has now been solved.
There was much speculation as whether or not Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine’s exciting but untapped digital music service would be erased after merging with Apple and their almighty iTunes. The answer appears to be both yes and no, as The Wall Street Journal has found that Beats Music will have a relaunch and rebrand while being incorporated with iTunes next year.
Where as iTunes will remain the go-to source for digital downloading purchasing, Beats Music will now serve as a $10-a-month unlimited subscription streaming plan to satiate both kinds of music fans. The news comes at time when the music industry is grasping at straws on how to still make their products attractive to consumers.
It has been reported that no artist’s album in 2014 has yet to reach platinum (barring a Christmas miracle, it will likely stay that way) and iTunes is also reporting a 14 percent loss for their downloading sales. In December 2013, more than 800,000 people rushed to iTunes to purchase Beyoncé’s secret self-titled album in three days and haven’t appeared to give a damn about anything else since then.
Apple was quick to shoot down reports that they were permanently shelving Beats Music earlier this fall, and it looks like Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine will have become more useful in the new year than just being celebrity figureheads.
