The irony of a Chicago police investigator being busted for the type of crime he’s paid to catch officers for is tremendous–and that’s exactly the situation 28-year veteran George Roberts has found himself in.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Roberts, 50, was arrested in the wee hours of New Year’s Day on Thursday for driving under the influence of alcohol. Police News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala says Roberts’ 2007 Chevrolet TrailBlazer reeked of alcohol and he was cited for failure to use a turn signal, failure to stay in his lane and driving with no insurance.
In addition the all the formal charges, the police report also states how Roberts “soiled himself,” and had difficulty exiting his Chevy. He was also reportedly speaking with slurred speech and had a glassy-eye gaze about him during the duration of his arrest.
Although Roberts allegedly told the arresting officers he had only consumed “two rum and cokes,” he proceeded to lie down and go to sleep when he was placed in the back of the squad car.
“The matter is with the Inspector General’s office,” says Larry Merritt, a spokesman for the Independent Police Review Authority, whose department handles all misconduct allegations and use of questionable force from officers.
The Chicago-Tribune found that Roberts was released on his own recognizance and is due in Cook County Traffic Court on January 27.
