Viola Davis Is First Black Lead Actress To Win Emmy Award [VIDEO]

Well it’s about time. Tonight (Sept. 20), Viola Davis became the first Black lead actress to win an Emmy award for her performance on ABC’s How To Get Away With Murder

Davis started her moving acceptance speech by quoting Harriet Tubman.

“In my mind, I see a line. And over that line I see green fields and lovely glowers and beautiful white women with their arms stretched out to me over that line,” she said. “I can’t seem to get over that line.”

She added, “The only thing that separates women of color from anything else is opportunity,” to a round of applause.

Davis beat out actresses including Taraji P. Henson (Empire) and Claire Danes (Homeland).

Also winning an Emmy award tonight was Uzo Aduba for her portrayal of “Crazy Eyes” on Orange Is The New Black.

Needless to say, the Internet reacted with plenty of celebrities giving their kudos. See below and on the flip.
