Spotlight Interview: Ivan L

Usually, when rappers say they make “good music;” it’s really an overstatement. However, when I ran across Ivan L’s project #McFly4Eva on soundcloud, I knew right then and there, this dude is on the right path for greatness. From his laid-back swagger, lyricism, clever storytelling and versatility, Ivan L blows these other rappers out of the water!
Coming from Florida, Ivan L has been grinding and branding all over. This is definitely an artist that is serious about his music and not just doing it for the fun of it. In today’s rap game, the passion for the art is missing, but it’s refreshing to know that Ivan L has the passion for rap. His project, #McFlyEva is a straight through banger–no skips– that highlights his story and his experiences. Either you bump to his music all day, drive to it on a nice spring day or play it in the streets (got to have the volume on max), it’s that type of vibe. So fortunately for me, I snag an interview with the young artist. Check out our discussion below!
Tell us about yourself and your music.
Ivan L: I’ve been releasing music on the underground scene for a while now. I’m from Pompano, Florida, and I represent for the ones who appreciate it dope music with an emphasis on the art form. I have a sound that your lyric heads and your trap fans could mess with because I’m eclectic.
How would you describe your sound?
Ivan L: 3 dimensional. Futuristic. I feel like I stand out because I’m comfortable in my own skin and you can hear it in my music. I don’t care to copy another rappers sound. I’m cool doing what I do.
Talk about the experience making your song/mixtape.
Ivan L: When I approached making the song “88 MPH,” I wanted to make a song that would make the homies want to mash the gas pedal in their car and challenge somebody to a race. I wanted people who never heard my songs before to want to check us out just off how the songs makes you feel. A$hton Jazz blessed me with a verse, Sledgren from Taylor Gang sent me an insane beat and the rest was history.

What are you currently working on? Any new projects? Shows?
Ivan L: Right now I’m focusing on shooting more visuals for #McFly4Eva and promoting the album. I’ve been slowly working on new material in the studio so eventually I’ll have some new cuts ready to be heard on my Soundcloud.
What has been your biggest highlight in your music career this far?
Ivan L: Honestly, to me aside from meeting my favorite MC Curren$y in the flesh, I’d have to say my biggest highlight is just being able to do what I want musically on my terms. All my business is handled in house and I really enjoy the business parts of the game as well as the creative side.
Name your ideal collaboration: mainstream or independent artist(s)
Ivan L: Two artists that I would like to trade bars with one day would have to be Sade because she’s amazing and I’ve been listening to her for my whole life and Big K.R.I.T because he’s a genius.
Name something random that people do not know about you.
Ivan L: I collect comic books on comic books on comic books. I’m a huge fan of comic book culture and I actually co host a really dope podcast on Sci Fi/comics on soundcloud. (Kill Your Heroes Podcast).
What’s one thing you have learned or discovered while being in the indie music scene/industry?
Ivan L: People will lie or front about the dumbest shit. There’s no honor amongst thieves so do your best to move with the right people around you and you’ll be alright.
What can we expect from you in the future?
Ivan L: You can expect me to continue making dope music and keeping the control in my hands as far as how I’m represented. I don’t ever want to feel like I’m not in control of my destiny whether good or bad. I don’t ever want to put my foot on the brake.
Anything else you would like to share with our readers?
Ivan L: I want to thank everybody who has showed me support whether it be via plays on soundcloud, views on youtube, a follow, or sharing my music with other people. I love seeing people react to the work I put in the studio and your support keeps me working harder every day.
