Spotlight Interview: Joezki

Hailing from Stirling, Scotland comes an intriguing artist by the name of Joezki. He’s dabbing into the trap and drill sound of hip hop music, along with experimenting with other genres. He’s the type of artist that doesn’t want to be stuck into one box. He wants to be able to be as creative as he needs to be in his artistry and sound. Joezki is constantly on the grind, whether it’s collaborating with other artists, doing shows or working on his new mixtape. He’s definitely making moves.
I got a chance to interview Joezki. Check it out below!
Tell us about yourself and your music.
Joezki: Well, I’m Joe, or Joseph. If you look on my birth certificate, I’m 21 years old born and raised in Stirling, Scotland. As far as music goes, I try not to focus on genre or sub-genres too much, but I guess you could say I mainly make Trap or Drill, alongside some 90s New York sounding stuff… fuck I love that shit.
How would you describe your sound?

Joezki: If Marv from Sin City, $uicideboy$ and Mac Miller somehow had a lovechild, that’s how I’d like to describe my sound.
Talk about the experience making your song/mixtape.
Joezki: The experience working on the mixtape has been great so far; it’s good to have a full body of work to finish instead of just releasing one track at a time, which is cool. I can’t say too much yet, but working with other artists for the first time was mind-blowing, but that’s all I can say at the minute.
What are you currently working on? Any new projects? Shows?
Joezki: I’m currently slaving away on my debut solo mixtape titled Can I Still Get Into Heaven If I Kill Myself? due to drop around June/July 2016.  The aim is around 12 tracks, but nothing is set in stone yet (Laughs). I’m also working on a collab with Portland, Oregon artist CG, the EP is sounding INSANE, drops on 4/20 so watch out for that.
What has been your biggest highlight in your music career this far?
Joezki: To be honest, I’d say meeting new artists that have a similar vision and mindset. I have good friends in America now, that wouldn’t have happened without music. That and having people actually support something I created, that’s fuckin’ cool.
Name your ideal collaboration: mainstream or independent artist(s).
Joezki: There’s to many to mention, but off the top of my head: Kanye West, MF Doom, Jay Electronica, Yung Lean, Shawn Kemp (Lil Ugly Mane).
Name something random that people do not know about you.
Joezki: I used to play video games competitively, Call of Duty, Halo, Gears of War and Counterstrike: Source. I’d spend 8-12 hours a day in front of my Xbox/PC from late 2007 until 2013. Decided to give it up as I felt like I had just wasted 5 years of my life, so I started making music.
What’s one thing you have learned or discovered while being in the indie music scene/industry?
Joezki: The work ethic, I learned that I won’t get anywhere just wishing stuff would happen. I’m constantly working on something and I feel that’s the best way to be.
What can we expect from you in the future?
Joezki: Can I Still Get Into Heaven If I Kill Myself, which is my solo mixtape, that’s dropping in the summer, but before that on 4/20 (April 20th) the collaborative EP featuring myself and CG drops. After that, just shows, shows, shows. I’m trying to play as many shows as possible toward the last third of the year and work on an album towards the end of 2016.
Anything else you would like to share with our readers?
Joezki: Check me out on Facebook, Twitter and Soundcloud: Joezki on everything! Shout out to Andrew Genesis, California Pink, CG outta’ Portland, Oregon, you guys for hosting the interview and everyone else supporting the movement. FK8 BOY$ 2016.
