Spotlight Interview: Kool Kidd Dre

Screen Shot 2016-06-16 at 12.36.05 PM
There’s this new guy on the block. He goes by the name of Kool Kidd Dre. Not only is Kool Kidd Dre breaking sound barriers–not being boxed into one category–, but he is talented as hell when he comes to storytelling and rhyming. Kool Kidd Dre’s latest project The Kool Tape 2 showcase his lyrical skills and each song paints the story as if you were sitting there front row centered. Kool Kidd Dre will become a household name, I’m sure of it. Remember the name. Remember the face. This Kidd is going places.
I got a chance to interview Kool Kidd Dre to talk about his latest release, doing shows, lessons learned in the industry and more. Check out the interview after the jump!
How would you describe your sound?

Kool Kidd Dre: Intriguing story telling with melodic vocal undertones and heavy 808 production.
Talk about the experience making your song/mixtape.

Kool Kidd Dre: I started making beats for “The Kool Tape 2” in November of 2015 and as time went on I started matching stories with the music. A lot of the subject matter were situations that didn’t make “The Kool Tape” that I really wanted to address like my fear of rationalizing a superficial nature or being defensive after a hard break up.
What are you currently working on? Any new projects? Shows?

Kool Kidd Dre: I’ll be performing at the West End Lounge on 6/26, Don Pedro on 7/9, and Loft 172 on 7/16. As far as new music, I’m putting together a mini project exclusively for everyone on my Planet Kool Kidd newsletter, people can sign up through my website
What has been your biggest highlight in your music career this far?

Kool Kidd Dre: That would definitely be performing at SXSW 2016. Not only because of the magnitude of the platform, but being an artist takes a lot of blind faith so when moments like that come it assures you your at least in the right direction. And the women in Texas are worth the hype (laughs).
Name your ideal collaboration: mainstream or independent artist(s)

Kool Kidd Dre: My ideal collaboration would be working with super producer Timbaland. His sound has no genre and it is amazingly unfair how dope his production is.
Name something random that people do not know about you.

Kool Kidd Dre: I have an outty belly button

What’s one thing you have learned or discovered while being in the indie music scene/ industry?

Kool Kidd Dre: That as an artist we have more control over our careers than ever before. Because of the direct to consumer relationship, it’s never been easier to cut out the middle men and capitalize on what channels works best for us.

What can we expect from you in the future?

Kool Kidd Dre: I’m really focused on building an organic fan base so I can put together my first tour.
Anything else you would like to share with our readers?

Kool Kidd Dre: My 16 year old little brother is the most important person to me on planet earth and he works my nerves.
