Interview: The Cataclysmic Variable

I had a very enlightening interview with one of the members of the psychedelic hip hop group, The Cataclysmic Variable. Grim Singmuf, the founder of the group set out an interesting and intriguing way to create a group and create music for a targeted audience who were open and innovative. Grim is not only an artist, but he’s a beat maker and a very selfless one at that. Right now, he is releasing beats for upcoming artists to use for no charge. That type of proposition set up more opportunities for collaborations and new fans. The Cataclysmic Variable focuses on quality, talent, and service as they are an outlet for music creatives. It was a pleasure interviewing Grim and learning more about his group, his thoughts, and his upcoming plans.

Tell us about yourself and your music.
My name is Grim Singmuf, I started the psychedelic hip hop collective “The Cataclysmic
Variable” with my friends Collie Reeka, Kirbs, and Tone Diz. We are all from different states and collaborate via email. Part of our mission is to help others achieve their dreams of becoming a hip hop artist by providing low cost and free, high quality original hip hop instrumentals. We are original, we are psychedelic and we love the art and culture that is hip hop.
How would you describe your sound?
The Cataclysmic Variable’s sound is probably best described as psychedelic inspired beats mixed with psychedelic fueled lyrics. As I grow, I’ve grown away from terms like “experimental” …each beat is different, and each writer is different we come from very different places and backgrounds and I believe this can be heard and felt in our sounds, it is truly our minds manifested into an audio format, the very essence of what the term psychedelic means; mind manifesting.
Talk about the experience making your song/mixtape.
This current mixtape we are making Amplified Minds is really the first release of artists from our whole camp. You see we have been making music together for a very long time and in different circumstances, most of those songs were soundcloud releases, this time we are more focused using the previous experiences to develop ourselves as a group. finding the people who are really down to create together has been the hardest part of the experience, and that is truly how this group as well as this next mixtape came to be, weeding out those who are not serious about making music and providing those who are serious about creating music with the proper template to do so.
What are you currently working on? Any new projects? Shows?
Right now, we are finishing up our newest mixtape, it is called Amplified Minds, at this point i feel this mixtape is going to be our seed, it has a perfect combo of our work together as well as our solo efforts. The title “Amplified Minds” was born out of our collective psychedelic nature, we believe that by “amplifying our minds” we are in turn “immortalizing our souls”… that in a nut shell is what we as a hip hop collective set out to do! New projects is kind of our constant, as soon as our new mixtape Amplified Minds” drops we will be creating another while working on solo EP’s for each artist. We are also always working on creating some free beats for the public who cannot afford quality beats. We have discussed shows, distance is something we must overcome. See I live in California, Kirbs is in Olympia, Washington, Tone Diz is in Santa Cruz, California and Collie Reeka is out in DC. I know shows are in our future, but as of now we are in the process of creating more of a presence in the physical and digital worlds.
What has been your biggest highlight in your music career this far?
The collaborations with other beings has become the biggest highlight and blessing, there is nothing like bringing different humans together to create a piece of art, no matter the medium. It is something that i will continue to do in this life, and it is inspired by the diversity of our universe and the love for it.
Name your ideal collaboration: mainstream or independent artist(s).
This is a question that often comes into my meditation, my third eye usually look overseas, someone like the Swedish rapper Promoe from the group “Looptroop Rockers” would be an Ideal collaboration for The Cataclysmic Variable, mostly because he is true to himself and that’s something I really dig in an artist and I feel that’s the vibe we bring. We are a collective of individuals, true to ourselves. on a personal level id love to collab with Sabac Red of “Non Phixion” and R.A. Scion of “Common Market.” I really enjoy their positive vibe, many of their songs really hit home for me.
Name something random that people do not know about you.
As a youth, I was taken from my family by the state of Rhode Island and placed in group homes from which I ran away, far away. I ended up hitchiking the country traveling with the “rainbow family” as well as following whatever the current manifestation or side project of the grateful dead was at different times. I developed a love for music, traveling and using psychedelics within this experience and this can often be heard in my lyrics.
What’s one thing you have learned or discovered while being in the indie music scene/industry?
Ive been making beats for a long time, like 10 years on different DAWs, and even longer if you count my mom’s pots and pans. One day out of curiosity, I looked to see what other humans charge for their beats, and what I discovered is that cost of a hip hop instrumental is insane. Not only that but there are different types of exclusive licenses as well as leases. Being a beat maker and a traveler, I’ve met many writers that need a sound to write to, amongst those who don’t want to pay there are those who simply cannot afford to pay. It is for them that I’ve decided that I will be periodically making instrumentals in different genres of hip hop and giving them away for free, an example: ( in the words of Michael Franti “everyone deserves music.”
What can we expect from you in the future?
More music from myself as well as The Cataclysmic Variable team Collie Reeka, Tone Diz, and Kirbs. We intend to expand our group and create many new vibes. We love hip hop but we are beyond genres, I could picture Collie and Tone creating a reggae album that would blow many minds into a psychedelic blissful state. We are creative and innovative beings and we intend to use this gift of life to amplify our minds and immortalise our souls.
Anything else you would like to share with our readers?
We intend on building a community of artists. If your readers take a listen and dig our vibe we invite them to reach out to us with feedback and if they themselves are artists we invite them to reach out to us for collaborations and to potentially join our team. Blessings to all!
