Q the Kid, formerly know as Young Marquis is on his way to making great things happen. The singer-songwriter, rapper, and producer, who hails from Greenville, NC, has been in this industry for some time now. He has learned a lot about music business, image and branding. Using social media as a platform for marketing and getting his music out there, with the help of a great manager, Q the Kid charted in the Top 5 on iTunes Charts Japan within 24 hours of his release single, “Pretty Girls,” back in 2012. Ever since then, he has been on an soaring musical journey.
The self-proclaimed Hippy Heartthrob makes that 90’s-influenced music with some new wave added into the mix. His targeted audience is the ladies, but everyone can enjoy his music. We got a chance to interview Q the Kid to talk about his highlights of his career, music, upcoming plans and more.
How would you describe your sound?
Q the Kid: My sound is unique. I’m not your regular singer. I don’t just sing , I build musical environments. I believe you become the best you when you do what you truly love, for me; I love musicality, stories, dance, emotion, the entire picture is painted in my head while recording (laughs). It’s weird.
Talk about the experience making your upcoming album?
Q the Kid: It’s crazy because as Young Marquis, I was sort of like a “Disney singer” ha. Everything was clean, fun, energetic; Don’t get me wrong those things are in my new music as well, but I feel as tho I went through a lot of things that really took effect on who I am. Not in a negative way in a better way. It takes a lifetime to learn truly who you are, I’m learning everyday.
What are you currently working on? Any new projects? Shows?
Q the Kid: Right now, I’m currently working on my album is called EQ. There’s a lot of of things I want to share with my fans. I mean so much has happened “highs, mids, and lows” everything. That’s why I called it EQ. As far as shows were planning a run through some states. But as of right now were focused on the internet. Performing for the world. Once we reach that successfully then well travel in person.
What has been your biggest highlight in your music career this far?
Q the Kid: The biggest highlight in my career is when I became #2 on the Japan iTunes charts! I was so shocked. I even went on 3 different computers in my house to make sure this wasn’t fake. When my manager called me I was asleep in my bedroom in North Carolina. And remember this was independent no label, no nothing. I don’t even think the song was mastered! But god makes ways man, I’m blessed.
Name your ideal collaboration: mainstream or independent artist(s).
Q the Kid: My ideal collaboration will have to be “The Cab” and Lauryn Hill! It will be amazing to work with them both. I love all types of music. I would also like to work with Chance the Rapper, Kanye, Porter Robinson, DJ Snake a lot of artists.
Name something random that people do not know about you.
Q the Kid: Hmm, one random fact….. well I think its sexy when a girl milly rocks. I just think that shit is sexy and they can get it on sight. Seriously, if you can dance in general, I think its mad sexy for a female.
What’s one thing you have learned or discovered while being in the indie music scene/industry?
Q the Kid: One thing I’ve learned is before you get into a industry where you are gonna be judged in, make sure 100% you know yourself first. Know who you are. Know what you stand for and why your doing it.
What can we expect from you in the future?
Q the Kid: You can expect a lot of music videos in the future. I’m working with my Videographers Hyperview Filmz there doing a lot of work for me and where gonna make sure to be consistent in material for you guys.
Anything else you would like to share with our readers?
