Meet Cash Rican, a young hip hop artist making waves with his story and his music. With a musical background and upbringing, Cash Rican was able to learn the ropes of the music industry and music business pretty young and quickly. With that said, we had to get an interview with him to learn more about his upbringing, plans for the rest of the year and upcoming music. Peep the interview below:
Tell us about yourself and your music.
My name is Cash Rican, but most just call me Rican. I’ve always been a part of the music industry due to family members being a part of it and showing me the ropes at a very young age. What really motivated me to jump into the music scene was a very close friend of mine, who was an up and coming rapper. When I was about 16-17 years old, he was arrested and charged with a crime he didn’t even commit. He would always call me, tell me to keep his name alive and put on for the team. So that’s exactly what I did! I created my own sound and made a name for myself.
How would you describe your sound?
To be honest I can’t really pin point my sound to a particular style or genre because I make different songs for different reasons. Certain songs might make you think about your life, make you wanna party or make you wanna go outside and be a gangster. I just want people to hear my pain, hear what I’ve been through and hear what I see on a daily basis.
Talk about the experience making your song/mixtape.
My experience in creating my third mixtape was very exciting and changed my outlook on music by being able to have the opportunity to work with so many talented artists. Growing up in NYC my music influences were definitely 50 Cent, Jadakiss, and The Diplomats but as a teenager my music influences moved towards Chief Keef, Migos, and Future because I could actually relate to them age wise and street wise. You can definitely hear a little of all of these artists influences in my music.
What are you currently working on? Any new projects? Shows?
I am currently working on “Rican’s Revenge 2” which is set to be released on December 24th and “Rican & Rondo” featuring Rondo Gz from the Bronx, NY which does not have a set release date yet.
What has been your biggest highlight in your music career this far?
My biggest highlight in my music career would be being able able to stand out by separating myself and switching lanes. I didn’t want to make music that had that typical Staten Island sound that only people in New York would listen to. I wanted to make music that people around my age could relate to no matter where their from. That’s how I got noticed by many artists such as Bo Deal, Waka Flocka, and Shy Glizzy.
Name your ideal collaboration: mainstream or independent artist(s).
My ideal collaborations would be with 21 Savage, Young Thug, & Lil Uzi Vert.
Name something random that people do not know about you.
Most people wouldn’t know that I am currently in College for my Associates Degree in Criminal Justice. I also went to a career & technical high school, so I was able to learn everything there is to know about Graphic Design.
What’s one thing you have learned or discovered while being in the indie music scene/industry?
One thing I’ve learned since being apart of the music industry is that nothing comes easy. you have to keep grinding and never give up. It’s how you put food in your stomach and money in your pockets. It’s how you make a name for yourself & earn respect in these streets. It’s focusing on your goals and doing what you have to do to succeed. It’s something most kids my age have to do to make it out of the hood.
What can we expect from you in the future?
You can and should expect a lot more features with a lot of artists from every hood around the country. I have some surprise features coming up real soon so stay tuned!
