Spotlight Interview: Sick.Life Record Label

For today’s spotlight interview, we decided to highlight the people behind the scenes in the music industry. They are the tastemasters and people who see talent even before we as the consumers see them. Sick.Life is an Independent record label based in El Paso, TX. Founded in March 31, 2015, Sick.Life has discovered and managed many talented hip hop acts and we are getting to know them.

Tell us about yourself and your music.
Our label Sick.Life features talented artists & producers from El Paso, TX. Our music isn’t probably what you’d expect to hear from rappers from El Paso, but we feel that’s what makes us different.
How would you describe your sound?
Our sound is edgy. We aren’t afraid to push the limits with music or lyrics. We’re an independent label so nobody has control over our sound except for us and we aren’t scared to create music.
Talk about the experience making your song/mixtape.
It was a great experience. It was a collaboration album so for every song, we had a few producers and artists in the studio at once, so the vibes were amazing. Every song we created had the perfect blend of artists and producers and it was my job as the engineer to glue it all together.
What are you currently working on? Any new projects? Shows?
The Label’s second album will be E$ BFNE’s second solo album titled State of Emergency set to release second quarter 2017.
What has been your biggest highlight in your music career this far?
Honestly, creating the record label has been a goal for me for about two years now. I started the studio, promoted shows and started managing E$ BFNE to help prepare for the all the challenges and aspects of running a label. So when we finally became a Label officially in November 2016, it was definitely a relief to have everything come together into one movement.
Name your ideal collaboration: mainstream or independent artist(s).
I know for sure E$ BFNE would want to collaborate with artists like Tech N9NE and Twista because they were big influences for him. I’d like to collab with producer Harry Fraud & Rapper Pusha-T.
Name something random that people do not know about you.
Before I built my own studio I would do mobile recording, where I would go to Artist’s homes and record them in their living rooms with my mobile interface, laptop, microphone and headphones.
What’s one thing you have learned or discovered while being in the indie music scene/industry?
Hard work pays off. We are all grinding for success, not only for self but for the label overall because we are all in this together. That chemistry isn’t something that can be forced and needs to be built over time. That hit record that everybody thinks they are making is like hitting the lottery. We all have grown to realize that it’s going to take time over years to get where we want to be.
What can we expect from you in the future?
More music and growth as a label. We are looking to expand as a label as we gain more resources.
