Independent rappers are coming out with new music and most of it sounds the same. So when we heard Big Al Swagg’s music and got to know he’s work ethic, we knew this dude would be different. Having his own flows and delivery in his tracks and learning the music business, let’s viewers know he is serious about his business and the craft of rapping. We got a chance to interview the young buzzing artists about new music, what he has learned while being independent, and his upcoming plans. Check out the interview below.
Tell us about yourself and your music.
I am an independent recording artist. My main genre of work is Rap/ Hip Hop but also have some music in the EDM, techno genre (Thanks to producers overseas who been reaching out). I act as my own record label. I was tired of sitting around waiting on other people. So I learned how to record, mix, and master my own music. I than did research and learned how to handle my own distribution, marketing and publishing and I’m also registered with BMI. I’m currently laying down the foundations getting the business aspect of things right.
How would you describe your sound?
I was born in the early 90s so I would say my sound/ flow is a mixture of old hip hip flows (lyrics) mixed with today’s modern sound/production. In this day its all about beats and rappers saying anything over it. I still take time to write my verses while at the same time catering to my listeners and giving them that swagg music that everyone likes.
Talk about the experience making your song/mixtape.
I play the beat(s) on loop and I sit and think about what feelings it evokes or the vibes. Once I get squared away with that its time to work. If I’m working on a full project before I start recording I try to have a theme/movement behind it first. Than i slowly bring it to life one song at a time
What are you currently working on? Any new projects? Shows?
Right now I got new single scheduled to be released on April 10, 2017. Called “Gettin Right,”[ which is] EDM/techno genra. Will be available in all online stores and streaming sites itunes, google play, spotify, tidal, apple music etc. I also have a project titled “Family Affairs” complete and getting ready for distribution as we speak. Dates TBA.
What has been your biggest highlight in your music career this far?
I’m gonna say back when I first started rapping. Their was this music company called “YourVibe” similar to YouTube. They was offering partnership deals to artist on the site. Basically getting paid to upload our music to the site and make money from ads. I set my eyes on it attended the company events rubbed shoulders with the CEO and like a month later he came to me with a contract/agreement.. That’s my biggest highlight because It was my first milestone I learned a lot and because of that it lead me to other ppl in the industry and I been steady working ever since.
Name your ideal collaboration: mainstream or independent artist(s).
Wiz Khalifa.. I was a fan of him before the dreads, before he became that Stoner guy. He’s also one of my biggest influences. I think we can make some good music and smoke a lot of weed during he process (laughs).
Name something random that people do not know about you.
Between the year 2011 and 2012 I went back and forth to jail 3 times. Total of 9 months out 12.. I got out April 2012 and never looked back. I used music as my escape from all the BS and trouble I was getting into.
What’s one thing you have learned or discovered while being in the indie music scene/industry?
It aint easy.. It’s constant work, dedication. Tryna make it in music like taking care of a baby. It constantly needs your attention, gotta nurture it in order for your brand to grow and be profitable. If your not ready to sacrifice than don’t even get serious. I learned this going through my own personal experiences.
What can we expect from you in the future?
