Spotlight Interview: @Calvert072

Young C is a buzzing young artist with a lot of potential. The 19-year-old is in his own lane as he makes music that people can relate to. We got a chance to learn more about Young C during a recent interview. Check it out below.
Tell us about yourself and your music.
My name is Noah Calvert or commonly known as Young C or Young Boy C. My SoundCloud is Youngcalv. I am 19 years old from Guelph Ontario Canada. I have been rapping for about a year now and have just recently in the past 6 months been taking it more seriously. My music is in an essence anything that I would listen to and music that I would like. I like to make music that speaks true to all kinds of people but at the same time speaks true to myself. I have some songs that talk about my life and experiences but also have songs about things I do and what I’m about, you know being that 19 year old just having fun partying and everything. I like to think my music really describes myself and the people around me.
How would you describe your sound?
My sound is somewhat unique. I mix flows in songs while using beats that aren’t all that mainstream. I think when you think of an underground upcoming rapper now a days you think of someone that has the same style as lil uzi vert or lil yachty. But not me, I like the real rap, the real talent and real verses that go into a song. Not just creating something that people will jam out to and not understand the words. My music or sound is a story that is told in a beat that people will enjoy and stays true to myself and never lying in my lyrics. I find that to be a big problem in music now.

Talk about the experience making your song/mixtape.
My first and just released mixtape: Young N Reckless was quite the experience to say the least. It started out with me just writing songs and not thinking of putting them all in a mixtape. To me, none of them coincided with one and other like an album would so a mixtape was the perfect fit. The process took around 4 months of creating songs that really spoke to me and spoke the truth about my life and everything I’m about. I started with a rough cut of 10 songs that I had put together, recorded them all and played them for my friends. The consensus was that they loved it and thought it was all well written and sounded great. But to me something felt not too right, I felt that my first mixtape, my debut mixtape is something that people are gonna listen to and really think of me and what the future of my music will be like. So to me, the 10 songs I had weren’t what I wanted to be on the first mixtape. So I cut 7 of the songs and went to the drawing board. Looking at what I had in the works and what needed some tweaking and put myself to work. I made and finalized the last 6 songs and had myself a mixtape and thus the final product you hear on SoundCloud.
What are you currently working on? Any new projects? Shows?
Currently I am working on my Debut Studio album. Yet to be named but will have at least 14-17 songs on it. This album will include songs that speak about my life and the ups and downs I’ve had thought my years. It will also include songs that speak about things I see in life and how these events have changed me and shaped me into the person I am today. Now most people think this will be a slow and not as hype as some of my other songs but that’s just the opposite. I will have songs that while still speaking truth about my life will be absolute bangers that are easily party songs that will have everyone jumping every time they hear it.
What has been your biggest highlight in your music career this far?
My biggest highlight so far in my short career is releasing my first mixtape. I think that it says a lot about how serious you are about music based on the moves you make in the industry. The release of my mixtape brought me a fair amount of attention and made me a little more noticeable in my town. People here and there come up to me and say hi and ask me about my music and what’s coming next. I really enjoy that and think that that in itself is a highlight. I enjoy making music that people enjoy and like to listen to.
Name your ideal collaboration: mainstream or independent artist(s)
I think my ideal collaboration for a mainstream artist would 100% be Big Sean. He is my favourite rapper by far and I just enjoy everything he comes out with. To be able to work with the likes of Big Sean and understand his process of creating great music would be the best thing ever.
Name something random that people do not know about you.
Ummmmmm….. Well I’m usually an open book, if someone asks me something I tell them the real answer. But I guess something way out of left field would be that I really enjoy listening to Beethoven and Bach’s symphonies. They really have a catchy and tasteful sense to them when listened to. I have a small background in piano so that’s mainly why I enjoy listening to it.
What’s one thing you have learned or discovered while being in the indie music scene/industry?
I think the biggest thing I’ve learned is that everything takes time. Everything happens at a pace and there really isn’t anyway to speed things up. I do what I can to promote myself and get my music played but you can’t just reach millions of listens on SoundCloud in a day. Everything has a pace and people can’t accept that and I feel that really hinders their productivity and future careers in music.
What can we expect from you in the future?
Music Music and more Music. I’m in this to make great music that I enjoy and others enjoy as well. Making a living off of my music is the dream and would be ideal and is what I am working towards. My style and flow is constantly changing as are my stories and my skill level. Everything you hear is an enhancement of my last.
Anything else you would like to share with our readers?
I know I’m small and just have a little popularity in my city but I am working my hardest. Long days and longer nights to put out a great product for everyone to enjoy. I am very self motivated and hope that all my efforts will have a great end result. My SoundCloud is Youngcalv and you can follow me on twitter @Calvert072 and Instagram @Calvert72.
